We had a good response to the callout for interest in Summer School.  Please look for more information and application/registration forms in this week’s Wednesday folder.
To secure a spot for your child, please complete both sides of the green application form and return with applicable payment to your teacher by Tuesday June 1st.

If you have any questions, please contact either Paula Busser or Elizabeth Oberle.

We will be using the Wornall Baptist Church as the main location for this program and we are excited to be able to work with the Church to offer this program to the current and incoming Border Star community.
As a reminder, the feasibility of the program does rest on being able to fill the minimum number of spots, so please get your applications in ASAP so that we can continue to make this available.

Regards,

Paula Busser

The Kansas City, Missouri School District (KCMSD) will host Summer School from June 14 through July 16 for credit recovery and additional learning opportunities in math and communications arts for invited students.

Students will be selected to attend Summer School following a careful review of their academic progress and performance data. Those students will be notified by letter within the next 14 days.

Participants will be assigned to one of the following school sites:

  • Central Academy (secondary students only)
  • Westport High (secondary students only)
  • Knotts Elementary
  • Wheatley Elementary
  • Northeast K-8
  • Kansas City Middle School of the Arts
  • Swinney Elementary
  • Lincoln College Prep Middle School

Administrators estimate that slightly more than 5,000 (grades 3-12) of the District’s 17,400 students will be selected to attend the Summer School program. Students will not have a choice of schools and must attend the school site designated by the District.

If academic achievement for all is truly our goal, this school district must ensure each of its students are performing at their grade level at the beginning of every school year,” said Superintendent John Covington. “The sole focus of our Summer School program is identifying and accelerating the development of our young people in need of additional and intense instruction. We need to level the playing field so all students can learn and that no one is left behind.”

Dear All,

Here is an overview of last night’s meeting with Jeff McDaniels and concerned parents regarding the hiring of Principals throughout the District.

Mr McDaniels was asked to conduct a meeting for parents to disseminate information regarding the process of hiring and placing Principals in all schools for the upcoming school year.  He basically explained that the Board Policy of having Parent participation and input into this process was overruled due to the scope of the process.  It is unprecedented that all Principals were terminated and offered the chance to reapply.  Therefore the sheer magnitude of trying to fill positions in the remaining schools and the short timeframe in which to do so meant at this point in time Parent participation was being excluded.

A large number of the parents that attended this meeting had views regarding this and the over-riding opinion was that regardless of the decision made to exclude parents, the communication or lack thereof was the most offending and important issue.  Mr McDaniels agreed to take this back to the administration and also to the Strategic Planning team that was covering Customer Service.  Transparent communication between the Administration and Parents (both ways) was the key to gaining trust, respect and ultimately constructive parental participation.

DAC asked that the Administration use the DAC Body as a conduit to clear and efficient communication between them and all Parents, rather than information being disseminated through various different groups via different methods and ultimately the message being lost.

Border Star Carnival – It’s Still On!

Saturday, May 15th
4:00 to 7:00 pm

Inside the School

*****

Let’s Have a Carnival

Light up the Stars
Turn on the tap
Fill up the tank
And dunk your favorite teacher.

Kick off your shoes
Light up your dreams
Hop on a rocket
And walk on the moon.

Cotton candy
In your face
Dogs that don’t bark
On hot fresh buns
Cake for the walking
And cake to eat.

Come see the Dragons
Have a good time
Border Star rocks
And don’t you forget it!
