A Great BIG Thanks

We would also like to thank Border Star parent Dave VonFintel for the referral to the Rockhurst Service Day for Freshman.  We were truly blessed to have an entire busload of excited new Rockhurst students come to help and support wearing their matching t-shirts!

We painted the office lavender, painted the swingset, made a mulch walking path, painted parking lot lines, WEEDED and ate some yummy pizza.

We would also like the thank Wornall Road Baptist Church and Pastor Mark for providing the teachers with a decadent Welcome Back luncheon on Monday with gifts and flowers.

And another HUGE thank you to Vicki Chaffin for the wonderful mural as you walk in the front door and to Edwina Littlejohn’s father Thomas Parrish for building the new classroom mailboxes.

Time to Spiff Up the Garden and Prairie!

Join Us for a Back-to-School Clean-Up Garden Party!

Saturday, August 21st
4:30 – 7:00 pm

We’ll be getting together to spruce up our garden and prairie before school starts back in earnest. Bring the whole family; we’ll have drinks (adult and kids) and food. Please consider bringing your own plates, cups, utensils and napkins in keeping with our earth friendly endeavors.

Also bring gardening tools for weeding, clipping and trimming!

Come catch up with old friends, make some new ones and make our garden area nice and shiny for the start of the new school year.

Inside and Outside Work Day

Sunday, August 15th
2:00-5:00 pm

Come help get Border Star all spiffed up for the first day of school!  We’ll need all the extra hands we can get.
As a service learning project a number of Rockhurst University students will be helping out as well.

Paint the school office and Library
Spray paint the swing set
Strike the parking lot
Re-paint the US map/4 square/hopscotch on the playground
Paint two classrooms
Touch-up hallway paint

Hands of Hope Today!

Sorry for the last minute notice, but the “Hands of Hope” initiative activities will take place at three Kansas City, Missouri School District (KCMSD) campuses TODAY Saturday, July 24th.

The project will now begin with a mix of revitalization work and upgrades from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Southwest High, Lincoln College Preparatory Academy, and Banneker Elementary. The work includes:

  • Painting of the curb areas
  • Sweeping and repainting parking stripes
  • Raking along fence lines
  • Painting of the fourth-floor hallways at Southwest High
  • Painting of the café at Lincoln College Preparatory Academy
  • Painting of the classrooms at Banneker Elementary

Work at the remaining 27 KCMSD schools will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7th.

Carnival is Coming!

Help Make Carnival A Success

Border Star’s annual school carnival is Saturday, May 15th from 4-7 pm.  This is our biggest family event each year – and it requires lots of help to make it fun for our children and families.

To volunteer, simply complete the form below and return to your child’s teacher OR send your name and email address to pmansur@kc.rr.com or georgieporgies@sbcglobal.net or use the Volunteer Spot button to sign yourself up for a shift.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Pre-Ticket/Ticket Sales – sell carnival tickets the week before the event and/or the night of the event
  • Food and Grill Station – sell hot dogs, veggie burgers and drinks
  • Ice Cream and Popcorn Stations – make and sell popcorn and ice cream cones/floats
  • Inflatables and Large Games – manage large inflatable games, including moonwalks, slide and obstacle course
  • Small Games and Activities – staff games
  • Raffle – collect raffle items, such as restaurant or service gift certificates, donated beauty products, artwork, toys…be creative!
  • Cake Walk – donate cakes, cupcakes and other baked goods for the very popular cake walk and/or work the cake walk
  • Set Up and Clean Up – help with set up and clean up on the day of the event

Donations Needed

  • Two new or used gas grills that can be used for carnival, Back-to-School BBQ and other school events
  • Gift items or gift certificates for carnival raffle. We welcome almost any donation – massages, car washes, restaurant certificates, jewelry, artwork, tickets to theatre productions, etc.
